What to Include in a CNC Machining Enquiry

A practical checklist for drawings, materials, quantities, finishes and inspection requirements when requesting custom CNC parts.

What to Include in a CNC Machining Enquiry

A useful machining enquiry explains what the part must do as well as what it looks like. Sending a clear set of files and requirements gives everyone the same starting point for a project-specific quotation.

Start with the correct drawing revision

Provide the current 3D model where available and a readable technical drawing. Put the part number and revision on both, and identify which document takes priority if they differ. Drawings should call out the features that matter to assembly, including threads, fits and critical dimensions.

Specify material and finish

Name the required material grade rather than only “aluminum” or “plastic.” Include the temper or condition when it is part of the design specification. State the desired surface finish, coating and appearance requirements, and identify any areas that must remain uncoated.

Make quantities and inspection clear

  • Give the quantity for this order and separate any possible repeat quantity.
  • Identify the dimensions that need an inspection record.
  • List requested material documents or other acceptance requirements.
  • State the requested delivery date and destination.

Separate requirements from preferences

Mark optional alternatives clearly. If a different material or process may be considered, say so; it should not be treated as an approved substitution. A quotation is easiest to compare when the drawing revision, quantity, finish and inspection scope are the same.

Send NUOPIN your project requirements for a discussion of the proposed parts and quotation scope.
